This one’s inspired by a huge oak tree in Priory woods. I used layers of heavy body paint dragged across marks made by acrylic inks and my pencil scrawl.
A photograph only conveys a snapshot, a static moment in time. The layers in a painting can create something much more dynamic, different light, different weather and something about how we feel In that time or place.

I’m finally settled in my attic studio. After lots of decorating and banged my head (it has a sloped ceiling) i can really get cracking now. Here’s my “needs a bit more work wall”. I hang them up and they look at me and ask “what are you going to do next, and when are you going to finish me?”

When is a painting an abstract?

it’s been a while! We’re moving house next week so things have been super busy, I’ve still managed to get some painting done though. This one is interesting, when is a painting an abstract? The start of something good?
Some quick sketches from my imagination. I’ll work into them with layers of paint, graphite, watercolour pencil and oil pastel. The aim is to generate some new ideas and learn about the materials, colour combos and compositions on the way. If they don’t work it doesn’t matter, they can live in my scrapbook.

Another from Warley woods. This is a monotype, printing acrylic paint onto unstretched canvas. I used masks cut from masking tape to define the shapes. i’m not too sure how many like this i’ll do because it’s the most labour intensive technique I’ve ever used.

Warley woods, a regular haunt of mine during lockdown and a great inspiration for painting. This is where me and my little boy would head for our daily exercise. A tough time, but it gave me some lovely memories of spending time with my boy.
